Will your Facebook App work after October 1st?

12 July 2011

Major Change: HTTPS mandatory for all applications on Facebook from October 1,   2011

Today, people have the choice to browse Facebook over the secure HTTPS protocol. HTTPS is highly recommended when you are browsing from an open, unencrypted Internet access point.

A lot of applications, for example on-line games, contests and even customized page tabs are only served via HTTP, this means that the application will not work for people with the HTTPS settings enabled. They will have to stop using HTTPS to interact with those applications.

From October 1st, 2011, Facebook demands that all applications must be able to use HTTPS connections as well as HTTP. This means that all app developers need to build in support for this within the next couple of months.

A huge change - so make sure that the applications you are using will still be working after October 1st!

Our clients, who have the agreement "Hosting, License & Technical Updates", will not need to do anything - we take care of all the necessary changes. All of our applications, which we have delivered since January 2011, are HTTPS ready.

Facebook Places 6 months later...

In January Facebook Places and Check-ins was launched in Sweden. Back then we advised to be careful when merging your existing Facebook Page with a place. It was a bit confusing what the differences were exactly between a Page and a Place, and which one you should prefer.

In the meantime Facebook has done a great job in making Places more consistent with Pages.

Basically, today a Place Page is a Page with a physical location where people can check-in when using a mobile device.

The only differences from a Company Page are:

- People can check-in in their mobile device when they are close by
- The Place Page shows a Bing map with your business location
- Besides the amount of fans, there is also the amount of total check-ins visible

If you have a business and you would like to create a Place Page (Facebook also calls it a "Local Business" Page) simply go to the "Create a Page" section on Facebook and fill out the address of your business - and that´s it!

News from our App development department

We are working on an exciting project for a household-care brand from Procter & Gamble. In Germany, the dishwashing liquid is known as Fairy. Here in Sweden it has the wonderful name "YES". Please check out the YES Facebook page (in Swedish) here:

http://www.facebook.com/yesdiskmedel

YES (Fairy) Facebook page

We at SkandNet are responsible for the application development and Facebook integration, and YouMe Agency from Stockholm stands for concept and design. SkandNet has also developed a content management system for each page application, so new content can easily be added.

The Page was launched a couple of days ago, including a summer competition during July and August with the possibility to win weekly prizes.

In the contest, people can create events for a BBQ with their friends. The application is creating a Facebook event with the possibilities to accept the event, post on the event´s wall, etc.
If you would like to check it out, you can come directly to the summer contest here:

And last but not least, SkandNet's best performing ad on Facebook last month was...

Best Facebook Ad in June 2011

Is your dog a winner? Which dog owner wouldn´t click on that ad?! It was leading the person right to a photo contest for c/o Hotels (http://www.facebook.com/careofhotels), where the dog could win a hotel stay...
